Maj. George Wishart (1887 – 1970)

George Wishart was the eldest of six children of George Baillie Wishart, a career soldier, and his wife, Jessie Isabella Fergusson. He was born on 10 July 1887 at 4 Douglas Terrace on Bothwell Street in Hamilton. Four years later the family had moved to Bent Cottage and after leaving school George trained as a civil engineer. During the First World War George served in India as an officer with 1st King George V’s Own Bengal Sappers and Miners, Indian Army Reserve of Officers and rose to the rank of major.
After the war, in Glasgow, George married Mary Ross on 15 November 1928 with a daughter born six years later. He worked as a civil engineer until retirement and died at 72 Oxgangs Road in Morningside on 5 June 1970. His younger brother William died of wounds at the Battle of Festubert in 1915.
