Alexander was born on 12 January 1882 at 106 High Street in Burntisland, Fife. He was the seventh of eight children born to William and Isabella Wishart and when old enough, followed in his father’s footsteps and became a carter.
By 1901 the family were living in Kirkton Gardens, an address Alexander resided at for most of his life. On 4 December 1915, he enlisted in the Army and was eventually called up for service on 5 April 1917, when he joined a heavy transport company of the Army Service Corps. At some point during the next two years, he was transferred to the 403rd and then 515th Agricultural Companies of the Labour Corps and spent the rest of the war on Home Service. Rheumatism and eczema heavily affected Alexander’s military career, and he was subsequently discharged as being unfit for further service towards the end of the war.
On 27 June 1919, he married Elizabeth Dow in Balmerino, and one daughter was born of the marriage. Alexander died in Burntisland during 1968.
