James Wishart was born on 11 June 1895 in Milngavie, Dunbartonshire. He was the son of Alexander Wishart, a general labourer from Cowdenbeath, Fife and his wife, Mary Hunter. In 1901 James and family were living at 2 Laundry Place in Milngavie.
James enlisted at Glasgow with the Gordon Highlanders and saw service with the 8/10th Battalion, which had been formed from the 8th and 10th Battalions in May 1916 and was part of the 44th Brigade in the 15th (Scottish) Division.
He was killed in action in France on 14 October 1917 and buried in the Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux. Pas de Calais, (Grave no I.D.21.)
