France & Flanders
21 April 1918
Dying from wounds received in action at the 39th Stationary Hospital in France is Lieutenant Edward George Wishart of the 1/5th Gordon Highlanders. He had returned from a period of leave eleven days earlier and was shot through the lung at the Battle of the Lys, which was part of the German Spring Offensive, shortly after arriving back at the front. He was just 21 years old and before the war had been educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and about to go into farming at Westerfolds in Morayshire. Edward enlisted in November 1914 and served as a private in the Gordon Highlanders and then the London Regiment before accepting a commission. He was one of seven children of Frederick William Firman Wishart, a farmer from Aberdeen, and his wife, Katherine Moir Smith. The family are part of tree WIS0112.
