Alexander Shanks Wishart was born in Dalsay, Lanarkshire during 1885. His father, Robert, had been a coal miner but by 1901 was running a sweet shop in Dalserf. When he left school, Alexander also became a miner and married Janet Cairns in 1905 – after which time the couple moved to Denbeath in Fife which was also a mining town. Four children were born of the marriage between 1906 and 1910.
After war broke out, Alexander joined the Royal Garrison Artillery and was assigned to No.3 Depot, which was engaged in coastal defences near Plymouth. In 1917 he contracted acute pneumonia and was sent to the war hospital in Perth where he died on 16 October.
