In Brisbane, Queensland, 17-year-old draftsman Alexander McCallum Wishart visits the recruiting office and joins the Australian Army. With four years experience as a senior cadet under his belt he is immediately mobilised for active service, and having informed the recruitment officer he was almost 19, sailed for England from Sydney on 14 June where he joined the 11th Training Battalion AIF at Larkhill. Alexander spent less than a year in England before his real age was discovered, and he was sent back to Australia in early 1918. After the war he became a commercial artist and rejoined the Army during WW2 -serving with the 2nd Australian Infantry Battalion. Alexander is part of WIS0002 and died on 21 July 1953 in Sydney.
