In Ayr a 29-year-old postal clerk named Aitken Wishart visits the recruiting office and joins the military. Like many enlisting under the Derby Scheme, Aitken is sent into the army reserve and eventually mobilised the following spring, when he is posted to the Royal Engineers. Aitken is part of Wishart Tree 028.
Disembarking in Suez this morning is 1004 Pte. John Hay Wishart of the 30th Battalion, AIF. John had left Sydney with his battalion earlier the previous month, and upon arrival in Egypt caught the train to Helmieh, where they marched to Aerodrome Camp in Heliopolis.
